Maus Foundation Orphanage Center is an independent, non-governmental, social development organization that has been providing support to the orphans who live in very difficult and poor life.

At Maus foundation Orphanage centre, we are driven by a profound sense of compassion and a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of the unwanted in Tanzania especially in our region Arusha. Our mission is to provide a loving home, nurturing environment, and a brighter future for every child under our care.

Maus Foundation - Our Mission

Our vision is for each orphan to become a valued member of the Maus Festival Orphanage Center: so that they may get a better life than never before.  Our goal is to promote education and health for underprivileged orphans in the village of Kisongo near the town of Arusha, northern Tanzania, Africa.

Maus Foundation - Our Projects

Since 2020, we have reached our initial objectives:

  • Providing a meal each day to drop-in children.
  • Establishing a community garden as a source of food.
  • Providing education for orphans.
  • Starting sustainable small-scale businesses.
  • Constructing a building with bedrooms, kitchen, baths, and classroom.

Food

Nutrition is one of the greatest needs for these orphan children, who have resorted to raiding fields when necessary. Our community garden meets some of their food needs. Children want and need to learn skills to support themselves. They are learning how to grow crops, using sustainable production methods. The Maus Orphans Bio-Intensive Club:

  • Produces vegetables and fruits for orphans.
  • Provides the experience of agriculture and self-reliance.
  • Creates an awareness between the health of the environment and their own health.

EDUCATION

Basic education initiates the journey out of ignorance and poverty.  Although primary school in Tanzania is free, the supplies and uniforms are not.  Orphan children have less supervision and greater need than children from intact families.  Orphans in particular are recruited for child labor, particularly vulnerable to mistreatment and often not even paid as promised.  Additionally, they miss the opportunity to attend school.

Our scholarship program:

  • Buys uniforms, shoes, and school supplies for primary and secondary students.
  • Pays tuition for secondary school students.
  • Provides tutoring and advice for students who lack parental support.
  • Has enabled several girls to become professional tailors.
  • Has enabled two young women to complete college and become teachers.
  • Has enabled one young man to become a licensed safari guide.

SUSTAINABILITY

Many orphans must live on the street without adult guidance, or have only loose connections to extended families. This makes them vulnerable to anti-social behavior, drug abuse, or sexual abuse.  Although the orphans are the object of pity, they are also seen as an unwanted burden, and suffer from the stigma of their parents’ death from AIDS. They don’t want to be beggars — they want to be productive!

Maus Foundation Orphanage Center:

  • Produces arts and crafts projects to generate income and enhance self-expression through the Arts Club.
  • Provides education about ecology and the environment through the Birding Club.
  • Organizes field trips to nearby national parks, enabling children to see their natural resources.
  • Provides education about AIDS prevention, drug abuse prevention, and birth control.
  • Runs a preschool program for five-year-olds.
  • Promotes the experience of cultural belonging by serving as a safe place for homeless children.

Maus Foundation - Who we are

Maus Foundation Orphanage Center was primarily a rescue center for abandoned, orphaned and at risk babies in Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa.  Hundreds of babies, have been rescued and most of those have either been adopted through the Tanzania Social Welfare System or returned to an extended family member.  As God led Maus Foundation into more ways to help, programs to help women who had been abandoned were added.  Realizing that many of the babies who came to Maus Foundation had lost their mothers in childbirth, a program to teach traditional birthers out in remote villages better ways to help deliver babies safely was begun.  That is what Maus Foundation is all about, making new happy families.

Maus Foundation - Future Dreams

Establishing a school uniform for our children. We would like every child to wear the same uniform to create a sense of solidarity and identity for our center. One of our girls already got a uniform to test it, it is made of traditional massai fabric and we think it suits her very well!

Having our own car

There are a lot of occasions where a car would be very helpful. Bringing food to our center without having to pay a taxi, picking up guests/volunteers from the airport, going on excursions with the kids and most important: being able to drive to the hospital in case of emergencies.

Equipment for the new office

For printing the certificates of our volunteers, preparing the data for the sponsored children, printing monthly exams and photocopying important documents we have to use the service of a shop every time which is very expensive. It would be a lot easier if we had our own printer and a photocopy machine.

Total cost:

  • 1 uniform: around 21 euro/ 23 us dollar
  • photocopy machine: 632 euro/ 671 us dollar
  • printer “Epson L805”: 368 euro/ 400 us dollar
  • desktop computer: 463 euro/ 492 us dollar

MONTHLY NEEDS

Every month we are in need of money to pay the school utensils, food, electricity and water bill and the salaries for the team.

  • school utensils: 33 euro/ 35 us dollar
  • Food: around 1300 euro/ 1500 US dollar per month
  • cleaning items: around 68€/ 72 us dollar per month
  • electricity bill: around 20 euro/ 23 US dollar per month
  • salary: around 59 euro/ 67 US dollar per person (8 people are employed)
  • refill the gas bottles 3 times a month: around 24 euro/ 26 us dollar per filling
  • water bill: around 25 euro/ 27 us dollar
